The Last Two

The last two cardinal sins mentioned in John of the Cross’ Dark Night of the Soul are envy and sloth

Envy – Have you ever been frustrated because someone you know has an amazing spiritual life and yours seems so flat?  Yep, that’s envy.

Sloth – Are you tired, run down listless?  Do you poop out at parties?  Well have we got something for you? Vitameatavegamin

Seriously though, sloth is the temptation some of us feel sometimes when we don’t feel better after a time of devotions.  We want to quit doing them, because they don’t do anything; right?  Or do they?

John of the Cross warns not to measure God by our own devotional times.  Instead we must measure ourselves by God.  In other words, God is the same yesterday, today and forever and we are the ones being conformed into his image.

  1. So true! So often I measure God by how much He shows up in my quiet time…which, to be honest, sometimes leaves me with a puny God. I’m thankful that He’s bigger than I treat Him!
