The second of the capital (read:deadly) sins is GREED, or I want it NOW daddy!!!
Have any of you ever felt like your prayers bounce off the ceiling? I know I have. Why does that happen? John of the Cross shares his opinion here.
John shares how we become discontented with what God gives us because we do not experience what we think we deserve.
He goes on to relate that our hearts sometimes grow attached to the feelings we get from our devotional life. We "focus on the affect, and not on the substance of devotion." That substance is God.
In order to get rid of this spiritual greed we have, God removes all of the pleasure of our devotional life, so that our soul may be purified. "For a soul will never grow until it is able to let go of the tight grasp it has on God."
This one is hard for me to understand, but I get it, sort of. The fact that God purposefully removes the good feelings that come from pursuing him is hard to handle, but I understand that we must come to rely on God himself, not on our own feelings which come from following him.
